General Toenail Fungus Information
Toenail fungus is a fungal infection in one or more toenails. Toenail fungus starts as a small spot under the nail, but as the fungus spreads, it may cause the nail to discolor and thicken. Toenail fungus accounts for 50 percent of all nail disorders. The fungus is often difficult to treat and the condition may recur; however, medications are available to treat the fungus effectively.
Possible Causes of Toenail Fungus Toenail fungus is caused by a fungus from the dermatophytes group; yeasts and molds can also cause toenail fungus. These fungi live in warm, moist environments, such as showers, locker rooms and swimming pools and can enter the skin through cuts or small separations between the nail and the nail bed. Infection with nail fungus occurs more often in toenails than in fingernails because toenails are often confined inside dark moist socks and shoes.
Possible Symptoms of Toenail Fungus Symptoms of nail fungus include thickened, discolored toenails with brittle edges. The nails can look flat and misshapen and can look yellow, green or brown in color. Nails can also separate from the nail bed and can emit an unattractive odor.
Possible Lifestyle Changes for Toenail Fungus To prevent toenail fungus, keep your nails short and clean and use an antifungal spray or powder. Keep feet dry and donít go barefoot in public places. Do not trim or pick at the skin around the toenails.
