New York Times Examines Public Health
Campaign To Promote Breast-Feeding In U.S.

Article Date: 15 Jun 2006 - 12:00pm (PDT)

The New York Times on Tuesday examined an HHS public health initiative that is encouraging women in the U.S. to breast-feed, which some experts say can improve infants' health and reduce their risk of some developmental disorders. The public health campaign, called "Healthy People 2010" aims to have 50% of women who delivered infants to continue breast-feeding for up to six months after delivery. Some health officials say that breast-feeding has been shown to be so beneficial to women that they now must be warned that it might be risky not to breast-feed.

Some people -- including Lawrence Gartner, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics' breast-feeding section -- say breast-feeding can protect infants and children against ear infections, diarrhea, meningitis, upper and lower respiratory infections, and pneumonia. In addition, some evidence has shown breastmilk to be beneficial in improving premature infants' cognitive development, the Times reports.

However, some critics say the new campaign overstates the benefits of breast-feeding and could make women who cannot breast-feed, or who opt not to, feel ashamed and inadequate, the Times reports (Rabin [1], New York Times, 6/13). The Times in a related article on Tuesday also examined the benefits of breast-feeding in preventing childhood obesity (Rabin [2], New York Times, 6/13).
